If you’ve been invited to a pagan wedding, you may be wondering what to expect. Pagan weddings can be a bit different from traditional weddings, so it’s important to be prepared.
In this blog post, we’ll give you a full guide to pagan weddings, including what to wear, what gifts to bring, and what traditions to expect. With this information in hand, you’ll be sure to have a wonderful time at the wedding and help the happy couple celebrate their special day.
What is paganism?
Paganism is a broad term that covers a wide range of beliefs and practices. Generally, pagans worship nature spirits and/or work with natural forces to achieve their goals. Some pagans also believe in reincarnation and the interconnections of all life. Paganism is often seen as an earth-based or nature-based religion, as many of its central tenants involve deep respect for the natural world.
Paganism is not affiliated with any one particular deity, but instead honors a wide pantheon of gods and goddesses. Pagans also often practice magic, which they use to manifest their desires and bring about positive change in their lives.

What to expect at the ceremony
A pagan wedding ceremony is typically held outdoors, in a natural setting such as a park or forest. This is because pagans believe that nature is sacred and should be respected.
The ceremony will likely be led by a priestess or priest, who will officiate the exchange of vows between the couple. Celebrants are the modern choice for couples looking to have a full pagan ceremony or to just add some unique ceremony element. The vows may be traditional or may be written by the couple themselves.
After the vows are exchanged, the couple will often share a ceremonial drink. This is known as the “sharing of the cup” and is seen as a symbol of their commitment to each other. The couple may also exchange rings, which represent their never-ending love for one another.
The most popular pagan ceremony tradition though is handfasting. This is where the couple’s hands are tied together with a ribbon or cord, symbolizing their union. Head you our handfasting ceremony blog for a full guide.
You may be surprised at how familiar much of the ceremony will be…
- There will be vows.
- You might see a bride in a white dress.
- You may see a wine blessing or the sharing of a loving cup by the couple.
- You may see a bride wearing a veil; after all, this practice goes all the way back to ancient Pagan Rome, when brides wore brightly colored veils to protect themselves from evil spirits.
- You will probably see the couple exchanging rings or some other token of their love, such as necklaces. Rings and other jewelry have been used for the purpose of binding people to an oath since at least the Iron Age. You may see the lighting of candles, possibly even a unity candle ceremony.
- You may be expected to stand at the ceremony but usually, the seating is the same, or more than likely the chairs will be in a circle around the altar.
What to expect at a pagan wedding reception.
The best part of a pagan wedding, well we think so! Traditionally pagan weddings were all about the feast and celebrations after. Luckily it is no different from most modern pagan weddings!
There will normally be a large feast with lots of food and drink for all the guests. Usually, there will be a buffet style so that everyone can help themselves and enjoy as much or as little as they like.
It is also common for there to be dancing at a pagan wedding reception. There is usually music playing throughout the whole reception, but sometimes there will be a specific time set aside for dancing. This is a great opportunity for guests to let loose and have some fun!
Pagan weddings are a great opportunity for couples to express their unique spirituality and for guests to witness a truly one-of-a-kind ceremony. If you have been invited to a pagan wedding then expect a relaxed but fun, filled night of dancing and celebrating!
What to wear to a pagan wedding
Pagan weddings are typically informal affairs, so there is no need to dress up too much. However, it is important to respect the sanctity of the ceremony by avoiding clothing that is overly revealing or obscene.
Instead, opt for something comfortable and flowy that you can move around in easily. Bright colors are also encouraged, as they are thought to bring positive energy to the occasion.
If you are unsure about what to wear, it is always a good idea to ask the couple for their suggestions. They will be more than happy to help you out!
What gifts to give at a pagan wedding
Pagan weddings are all about celebrating love and commitment, so the best gifts are ones that reflect these values.
One idea is to give the couple a symbol of their love, such as a carving of two entwined hearts or a statue of Venus and Mars. Alternatively, you could give them something practical that they can use in their everyday lives, such as a nice set of dishes or new cookware.
Whatever you choose, make sure it comes from the heart!
